NDNorth: Children's Day pt 2

June 1, 2017, dawned clear and warm. The three small ones who live at New Day North Care Center are in for a treat—an outing to a local park to celebrate Children’s Day.
Ruth grins at Shua Li Rose as if to say, “Can you believe this???”

Ruth somehow knows she is in for a treat…she just doesn’t know how wonderful it will be.

She is beyond happy to be able to “get her feet wet” in the lake water.

Shua Li Rose is having a totally new experience…squishing her toes in the mud.

While a bit unsure, she is letting her feet sink down into the muddy soil.

And now she is investigating this strange substance that is covering her feet.

Frank is thoroughly enjoying his chance to splash in the fountain.

He enjoys this time to be out in the late spring sun and to be celebrated for being a child.

Ruth is thrilled to get her chance to dip her feet in the fountain.

No matter where she goes, Shua Li Rose always seems to make new friends.

As the outing draws to a close, Ruth and Frank are happy to rest on the laps of New Day North Staff members and savor this wonderful experience.

NDNorth: Music Time!

Many people believe the statement that music is a universal language. The children of New Day North seem to agree. When a visiting college student brought a guitar to the foster home, the children gladly participated in the singing.
Frank is keeping a keen eye on the guitar. He’s watching and paying close attention.

Ruth may not know the words, but she is certainly making a joyful noise of participation.

Shua Li Rose is doing a great job of clapping along to the songs.

Frank doesn’t seem too sure about all the work it takes to make the motions to the song, “Deep and Wide.”

But clearly from this winning smile, he is enjoying the time of “active” music.

Shua Li Rose is quite adept at keeping time with the tambourine.

And Ruth adds to the percussion section with her version of the maracas.

Shua Li Rose’s sweet grin captures the joy that these children have when music comes into their home. It’s a wonderful place to be!

NDNorth: Welcome Ruth!

Ladies and gentlemen... boys and girls of all ages... join us here at New Day North in welcoming our newest arrival!

Ruth joined our little family here recently, and is the newest member of our Special Needs Care and Training Center (read all about our projects in Inner Mongolia HERE)

Ruth is five years-old and has a neurological disorder that has made it really hard for her to keep up with her peers, but changes nothing about who she is as a precious and precocious little girl! Just within her first few days here with us, she has gone from drinking a bottle to a cup, is figuring out how to feed herself (with help!) and can sit up in just about any chair we set her in. She even asks to get into the stander to help develop some leg muscles. This girl is amazing!

She cannot talk, but when we asked if she was happy to be here with us, she definitely communicated, "yes!" and the transition from her orphanage to our care seems to be going well.

Lydia carried her into the foster home, and Frank and Shua Li (Veronica) had some "welcome flowers" for her. Shua Li was SO excited to have a sister to play with, and Frank is enjoying having someone to learn from. These three are going to have a blast together... and probably get into a lot of mischief.

NDNorth: The Wonder of Christmas

As Frank and Veronica just joined New Day North in May, this year is their first true celebration of Christmas. Introducing them to a few traditions brought sweet and priceless reactions. What could build anticipation and excitement more than these curious activities of bringing in a tree...

stringing lights...

...and setting them aglow?

The light snowfall outside created the perfect Christmastime feel around the hustle and bustle of stringing and decorating.

But the tree was only the beginning of the festivities! There were gifts to prepare for little friends who were coming to celebrate...

Cookies were ready to be decorated...

Young and old jumped into the rolling and cutting and sprinkling...

What's Christmas without carols?

Gifts were due to be given, and Frank and Veronica discovered the joy of giving.

Not only to little friends, but to nannies too! Merry Christmas, Lillian!

Gifts are also to be received! What do you think is in the bag, Frank?

Frank was just a *little* pleased with his new outfit...

What do you think of your gift, Veronica?

Pretty in pink...

And finally, what is Christmas without good friends and a big hug?

Merry Christmas, everyone! 圣诞快乐!
