Report from June

Savannah Project and Little Deer Project

Recent Event

1. Happy Children's Day

Volunteers and Ultraman celebrated Children's Day with the children. They presented their talents to each other. After a delicious hamburger lunch, Ultraman, who came from afar, accompanied the children to the amusement park to release their energy.

They went to Tonglehui Children's Paradise to play and set up a tent for a picnic outside. It was a very happy experience to watch the children go from being cautious at the beginning to running freely in the playground!

2. "June 1st" Charity Sale

Beijing Qingmiao Kindergarten raised funds through a charity sale for the children of New Day Foster Home.

3. Dragon Boat Festival

Traditional festivals are full of many delicious foods and activities- eating barbecue, making zongzi, and drawing on paper!

4. During the class about the seasons, the nannies told their children what they saw, what they wore, and what they ate during summer, so that children with limited mobility could also enjoy the joys of summer!

5.  Happy research activities

After COVID, the children went out with the school for group activities for the first time. They went to Luzhiyuan Tourism Science and Technology Park. Everyone played games together, ate together, swam, and had water fights together. They learned from each other, helped each other, and exercised self-care and self-reliance during the experience.

Medical Updates

On June 15, our little Elizabeth was finally discharged from the hospital! She lost weight, but her big eyes were still full of energy, and she stretched out her arms happily when she saw us. After, being discharged from the hospital, her diet and nutrition will need to be closely monitored to ensure she gains the weight she lost.

"Many children are in need, and we are willing to support them!" As the children grow taller new braces and wheelchairs are needed. Some volunteers purchased a wheelchair and two posture correction chairs for the children and updated the existing equipment.

 Eleos Project

In June 2023, we visited 11 children in poor families. We gave $500 in aid, and more than $150 in materials, providing help to 4 children and their families who are in dire situations.

Family Visits

On June 3, Beijing volunteers and the Hohhot Poverty Service Team visited 7 new children in need and 4 children already in the project. During the visit they learned more about the needs of the families.

Xiao Nan

Xiao Nan joined the Eleos Project in June. Xiao Nan's father suffered a car accident when he was young, and his left leg was amputated. Although he has a prosthesis it is difficult for him to do physical labor. From the visit on June 3, we learned that Xiao Nan's father's new prosthesis did not fit well, which affected his daily activities. We quickly connected him with a technician, who volunteered to inspect and adjust his prosthesis. After the adjustment, the comfort and mobility greatly improved! At the request of Xiao Nan's father, his old prosthetic was repaired and the foot boards were replaced so that he could use them as a backup.

Xiaoyun

Xiaoyun took the college entrance examination this year. After the examination, she wanted to find a part-time job to get some income. We connected her with a restaurant where she could work part-time. The physical work in the kitchen was a bit difficult for Xiaoyun who started working for the first time. The boss said that she has a good working attitude and works very hard, but her work speed is relatively slow. Xiaoyun cherishes this job very much. A place that can provide board and lodging is very satisfying to her. Her mother is also hoping that the restaurant will continue to give her the opportunity to work part-time, but we know that working in a restaurant is not a long-term solution given Xiaoyun's physical condition.

After the results of the college entrance examination were announced, and Xiaoyun found out that she did not do well in the exam, she was very disappointed and felt that her future was bleak. We believe that every human being has value and potential. We need to help Xiaoyun know herself, build self-confidence, and have hope. We're working hard to find opportunities for Xiaoyu that are more appropriate for her.

Xiaoxin

Xiaoxin is 8 years old this year. His father died of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage in 2020, and his mother is mentally disabled. Xiaoxin is a lively and cheerful child with very clear language expressions. During the visit and chat with Xiaoxin on June 3, we learned that he needs some clothes and stationery. When the needs of the children became known, many caring families sent over clothes, quilts and other daily necessities that were needed. On June 15th, we were able to deliver these supplies to Xiaoxin's home.

Xiaohe

Xiaohe is 12 years old this year. When he was young, his parents divorced, and he lived with his mother. His mother suffers from a mental disability, has been on medication for many years, and is unable to work due to illness. Xiaohe doesn't like to talk, doesn't like to communicate with others, and behaves very nervous in front of strangers. To better help Xiaohe's family long-term, we needed one volunteer willing to donate time to build a relationship with him. We are very grateful that we have found a long-term volunteer who is willing to serve his family. On June 15, the volunteer went to the family with us to understand the situation, get to know them, and brought a lot of encouragement to the family. Long-term one-on-one volunteers can serve families in multiple ways such as more visits, companionship, and timely understanding of needs and responses.

Classification of donated materials

Since the launch of the project, the New Day team has received material donations from caring people. Items such as clothing, quilts, toys, and stationery, which need to be screened and classified according to the size and age of the children and family members. After sorting, the items are assigned to each child and family. At present, distribution to the closest families has been completed, and the rest will be distributed soon.
