A month is neither too long nor too short. It doesn't take long because you can see the numbers on the calendar changing every day. It's just 30 numbers turning over, and a month is over. Changes will happen to many people and things.
During home visits in September, the staff noted that within one month, the children’s families had undergone great changes, some of which were unexpected.
The situation in Xiaowen's family was that misfortunes never come singly. While the grandfather was doing farm work, he was hit by a rock that tore a big hole in his face, requiring 13 stitches. The 80-year-old man should have enjoyed his old age in peace, but the burden of life did not allow him to rest. After being injured, he had to go to his daughter's house to recuperate, leaving his wife to take care of their grandson.
The primary school that Xiaowen attended is no longer in operation. Children with developmental delays like Xiaowen can only go to special schools in the county. Xiaowen cannot take care of himself and cannot live without his grandparents. Grandma said that they didn’t know what to do about the future, but they will take good care of their children while they are still alive.
Everyone was sad to hear these words. The staff members were in a very low mood after leaving Xiaowen's house. They said that this trip has changed too much for everyone, every family has encountered difficulties, and life is difficult. Indeed, after spending time with these families, we treat them as family members and want to protect them, hoping that they will always be safe.
When we arrived at Xiaolin's house, great-grandmother greeted us with a smile as soon as she saw us. Seeing the elderly couple in this family brought healing to our hearts. The 90-year-old man cooks for the whole family every day and still faces life with a smile. Xiaolin’s grandmother has muscle atrophy in her hands and has been undergoing check-ups and doctor visits recently. The old man is not very strong and to untie the food bag he tore it open with his mouth. Seeing this, the staff secretly went to the yard to wipe their tears.
Ever since the car accident, Xiaorong's mother has never been able to shake off the disaster, and her relationship with her grandmother has never been harmonious. After Xiaorong's brother was admitted to high school, she decided to take her other two children to study and live in a nearby county. We can understand her decision and support her to change her environment. But it’s not easy for us not to see the children again.
The yard at their home was full of vegetables, and it felt like the family left suddenly. Xiaorong's favorite puppy is still in the yard, but it has lost its former vitality. We called Xiaorong’s mother, and she said we could talk about it next time. We didn't force it. Her refusal to see us made us feel that we should give her some time to adjust, and not disturbing her was also a sign of respect. We wish their family a new start in their new place.
The September visits started with clear skies, but suddenly there was heavy rain + hail. The staff immediately became nervous. On the one hand, they were worried about driving safety, and on the other hand, they were also worried about delays in the subsequent visits. But after climbing over a mountain in the rain, we found that the rain had passed on the other side of the mountain and the sky was clear, and we were unexpectedly rewarded with the beautiful scenery after the rain. So we continued on, encouraged and full of hope.
Just like the sudden weather changes, families of children in trouble often encounter violent storms and find it difficult to move forward. Maybe you will be in this situation sometimes, we need to support each other and move forward with the people around us. Who knows what the scenery is like on the other side of the mountain? You might as well continue to travel through wind and rain, the light of dawn on the other side of the mountain is the direction of your journey.
The storm will eventually stop, and the beauty will be there!
Difficulties will eventually pass, and the future is still promising!
